There are two reasons to have the surgury, You or your daughter. If the surgery is not immediately medically necessary, then your dughter doesn't need it, but many parents feel they do, to avoid embarrassing questions by relatives, babysiters, etc. After discussing with both the PedEndo and the Urologist we decided that Ginny is fine as she is and to rush the surgery would be unwise, in that we would be foregoing her chances to take advantage of possible future advances in surgery.

There are generally two surgeries, one to reduce the clitoris and the other to make a vaginal opening. The first is cosmetic, the second eventually medically necessary. In our opinion the first should be postponed until the girl is old enough to decide for herself. Most girl are very private about their genitals and it isn't likely that many people would be aware of any difference. Since the second isn't (at least in Ginny's case) medically necessary until she gets married, at which time she'll be old enough to decide for herself, we've postponed both until she decides she wants them.
