I am curious, Becki: what do you mean that your child will "probably" have CAH when born?? Did you have the genetic testing done and opt not to take the dexamethasone treatments? Do you have other children with CAH?? I was on the dex during my pregnancy with my salt wasting daughter, who is now 3 (and whose genitals are normal thanks to it, I might add!!). I got to hold her and bond for about an hour after her birth, and then they took her from me for about 2 hours to check her over, do the necessary bloodwork, etc. After that, she roomed with me exclusively and never left my sight! I breastfed her and there was never a problem with dehydration or weight gain, etc. She was ready to be discharged when she was 2 days old, but I had to remain for a week because of a serious infection that I had contracted due to my weak immune response from taking the dex (a WHOLE other story!!). According to our endo (who is the head of pediatric endocrinology in western Canada), extended hospital stays or neo-natal care is NOT necessary unless there are other factors. Try not to worry - you'll be holding your little one soon! God's blessings on your pregnancy!Wendy-Lee
