I'm working with the State of Maryland on adding CAH to the newborn screening panel. I started by first calling our State health deparment to find out exactly which screenings were already being performed and which they would, in a perfect world, do next. Astonishingly enough, the person on the other end said, "I'd love to add CAH next". Next, I started talking to the delegate from my district who represents me in the state. They found out for me that I first needed to present my "case" to an Advisory Council. They voted unanimously to support my efforts. (This, in essence, means they would try to find money or would support a bill in legislation.) I started in February (2000), spoke to the Advisory Council in March...and wheels have been moving to get funding from the Health Department to fund a pilot study and, eventually, a full-fledged program. In other words, right now it does not have to go through legislation. If the Health Department turns us down for funds, we'll consider going back to my delegate to write up a bill, etc. Good luck.....Kare
