Selena, I think the key is whether they are holding any fluids down. After an injection for fever/vomiting, we give sips of gatoraide or ginger ale every 15 minutes.  If he continues to vomit after an hour, it's an immediate trip to the ER.  The problem is that if they evern BEGIN to start to dehydrate, it is very hard to get the IV in.
