Re: Liquid Cortef

Hi Roberto: We are having the same problem that you are. Our son is 2 1/2 years old and his daily dose of cortisone is 8mg, divided into 4mg, 2mg and 2mg, thus making it almost impossible to use a 5 mg pill. When the liquid Cortef was recalled, we were sent a formula that the pharmacy has used to make up a liquid suspension. When our son was born, we did not know about liquid Cortef, and we used this pharmacy-made suspension for at least a year, when we encountered another CAH family using the Cortef. We switched because of the long shelf life, and convenience (the suspension we are getting is only stable for 7 days, therefore, we have to pick it up every week). The pharmacy has been wonderful about stocking the ingredients, since we could need more at a moment's notice if Jordan gets sick. I know there are others on this board who feel a liquid suspension of any kind may not be efficient, but we have never had any problems. Jordan has always been very healthy, although we do struggle with the 17-OHP levels. He has very frequent bloodwork, and the dose is constantly being adjusted, but the endocrinologist feels he is doing very well on this medication. Until his dose changes to a multiple of 2.5 (or until they come up with a 1 mg pill!!) we will remain on the suspension. I hope this helps. Feel free to email us if you have questions, or if you would like the formula. Heather & Gary Pearce
