Hi Heather, I know that everyone knows how I feel about the liquid suspension so it won't come as a surprise that I am posting here. I don't know that I think all liquid suspensions are bad, but I did want to point out one thing. The meds that our children are taking are really only successful when they help to sustain a stable OHP level over a period of time. If you are changing the doesage due to bad levels on a regular basis, perhaps it is because it is not dispensing an even amount of cortef each time. Wouldn't it be better to split the pill as closely as you can? We have worked with odd doses and have had very good success in the past. It has to be better than the constant fluctuation of the meds he is on now. It helps to replace the razor blade (slicer)when the blade becomes dull. This will render a more acurate cut, although I do agree a 1 mg pill will certainly help us all. Whether a child is healthy or not may have nothing to do with CAH. He may have a good immune system or he may not have come into contact with anything serious. CAH renders a child unable to fight off the infection or illness once it has been contracted. They are no more likely to contract a disease than you or I. The reason some of these CAH children died or suffered severe damage and excellerated bone growth was due to the fact the the orange liquid cortef by Upjohn was not properly dispensing the required dose each time and the childrens levels were not in good control. The children who lost their lives were unfortunate enough to contract an illness during this time and were unable to fight it off by themselves. The only reason my son is alive is, I believe, due to the flu shot, a strong immune system, lots and lots of hand washing and dumb luck. Why not give the pill slicer another try, if you are not getting acurate readings with the liquid, what have you got to lose? I wish you and your son the best of health.
