Extreme Startle Reflex

I know that my son is slightly under suppressed, but I was wondering if anyone else's child is dealing with a startle reflex that is as severe as my son's. If I walk around the corner and he is playing in a room and he doesn't see me coming, he jumps up in the air like a scared cat. I guess that's why they call it scaredy cat. He then lies down and hides his face and cries that he is such a baby or a scaredy cat. He asks me why this is and I have nothing to tell him. He still can't sleep through the night in his own bed because he ends up having such bad dreams that he has to come and find someone to cuddle with. When he does finally fall back to sleep, he grinds his teeth so badly that I actually have to hold his jaw still and whisper sweet nothings in his ear in the hopes of distracting his bad dreams. Some of the dreams he remembers with such clarity that when he reiterates them to me I can see that he is getting himself worked up all over again. We were at my sister in laws house the other day and all the boys were watching a sci fi show and I heard a lot of laughing and then I heard my son talking loudly and with great angst. I went to see what was going on and found that they were all laughing at him because, although he wanted to watch the show, he was afraid when they all turned the lights off. My heart broke for him and I don't know how to help him with this. Any ideas?
