My Adam chipped a baby front tooth on the playground.  First the tooth looked okay and then a few days later it split. Just like your son's - the root was okay. So the cracked part of taken off (so his tooth is not square now - it like half there).  I had them leave the tooth (the chipped one) and not remove it. They will bond it when he is three years old. I had to go to three ped dentists the first two were too scared to do anything after I told them about CAH and how you can die from shock.
