JillOur son is only 4 and I just started last month having him take his own meds. I cut them and leave them in the pill splitter and I stay with him most of the time and he knows to take half a cortef and 1/4 of a florinef in the morning and also what his noon and evening doses are.( I can always check to make sure he took the right does if I am not right there since I know what should be left in the splitter for the rest of the day)
I think just as the others have said that if I train him to do it now it will just be another function of his life when he is older.
My husband and I have talked about it though and as long as our son needs us to we will continue to buy his medsand pay for his medical bills and he will know that as soon as he's old enough.
My husband and I have both worked places that didn't have insurance and prescription plans and we have both had to live from pay check to pay check before too so we know that even when he is older and moves out he needs to know that as long as we are alive we will be here if he needs help paying for meds and doctor bills.
It is scarey to think that someday he will move out and I won't know if he took his meds or if he is feeling well but all that we can do is to train them to know that it is their life that depends on the meds and keeping their doctors appointments.
I also agree with the fact that by the time he is a man there are going to be so much better improvements made when it comes to CAH. It would be great for there to be a cure by then but if not we will have our kids ready for what little part of life we can. :)
