Perhaps it is because I come from an unbiased place, but I can see clearly both sides of this issue. There is no noticable difference to me between the stance that these girls/women have taken to warn of the potential danger than the ones that Laura warns of to protect others againts not being detected at birth and having the child be miss classified as a boy. Nor is it much different from Roberta wanting to make sure that we all stand ready to use the solu cortef shot at the appropriate time. It is also similar to my constant nagging about the bad liquid cortef. It is only human nature to try to protect people from suffering the same fate as we have. We just don't want this type of nightmare happening to one more person if it can be helped. We shouldn't be afraid or offended by the concerns of the other, more experienced individuals who have several more years under their belts. The feelings of anger should only come if this has happened to so many of them and they DON'T speak out about it. These people are just as torn up about the subject as you are. I know that when ever I read the board and saw that someone was still taking the liquid cortef, my heart raced and a little bit of panic set in as I imagined that something awful might happen to that child. I just had to speak up yet again even though I knew that some people were tiring of my plea. As I stated below, we may never know the lesser of two evils with the psychological damage of being severely virilized and gowing up feeling different or having the surgery performed and possibly having no feeling at all. Instead of getting defensive or hurt, why not just embrace all the information and experiences that we have available to us and use it to help make a much better, informed decision for our children. I think we can all agree on one thing, the information available to us regarding CAH is scant at best and this message board and the people on it are an invaluable resource to us all. The only way we will remove this issue all together is if we have EVERYONE do genetic testing prior to pregnancy and then they can be put on dex to prevent any virilization from the start. This would also remove the possible brain imprinting during the "testostorone bath" in utero. Let's face it, we have a long way to go to get to a good place for the treatment of CAH, let's make the journey together. I value each and every one of your oppinions and experiences. Thank you for being brave enough to share them all.LynnT
