Re: Meeting with Dr. New

Because each child is affected differently and to varying extremes, I believe it's not as clear cut as saying that no clitoral reduction surgery should ever be performed on a child. What I would like to see is more information given to the parents. Let them know there ARE choices. Let them know of the possible consequences and that no long term studies have been done. Inform them how little research has been done on women's genitals and of the very little doctors really know on the female clitoris and where the nerves are. Let them know that most surgeons consider the surgery a success by appearances rather than function. Don't rush the parents into any surgery. The surgeon we met with wanted to surgery right away on our daughter. Now when I read the report that vaginal surgery has better results if perfomed after age 2 I am so glad we choose to wait and do research. As I spoke with this surgeon in tears, he likened this, most wrenching of decisions, as just one of many we'll have to make in her life and even tried to relate it to making a decision to not buy her a car when she's 16. What? I said. He definatley didn't get it, so we moved on. This is what I would like to see happen. I remember when my daughter was about 4 months old her old endo said, "She hasn't had the surgery yet. Are you EVER going to have the surgery done?" As if 4 months was just soooo long and what was our problem. Well he hadn't even looked at her since she was born. Once she got on cortef her parts stopped being swollen and her body had grown. I said to take a look and then he agreed that we were making the right decision. He even said that when she had the labia unfused there will be more room for her clitoris. Anyway, what I'm getting at is he was pressuring me when he barely took notice of my daughter during visits and I didn't like it. ( We have a great endo now!!!) Good luck with the meeting!
