Re: Am I too sensitive?

I think you are right to trust your instincts. A good counselor can do good, but a bad (or simply ignorant) one can do tremendous damage. You know your child. Trust yourself, and help her to trust herself. I think Lynn's suggestion of extracurricular activity was excellent. I have seen so many kids blossom when they find something they can enjoy, and succeed at, outside of school. School can be very difficult for many kids socially because it is a very one-size-fits-all situation.

In reading your message an old classmate of mine came to mind. In high school she didn't quite fit in. She didn't like to go to the dances, or parties etc. Most people didn't really know her well. She wasn't the most popular, she did well academically but was by no means a stand-out, and she wasn't a jock. I happened to see her once while she was working. She was an EMT, or whatever like that they let you be in high school. She was with a group of EMTs and they formed a very cohesive group. You could tell she felt confident and "fit in". For some reason that information stuck with me.

At our 10 year class reunion she was by far the most fascinating person in attendance. She was a scuba instructor and had traveled all over the world. She was currently working on an island somewhere (can't remember where). She had definitely come into herself. She was gorgeous, animated, very interesting, and obviously content with herself. It was fascinating for me to see how well she was doing. She might not have "fit" into h.s. well, but man did she fit well into the world!

Sorry for the long post, I don't really know why your post struck me to respond. I guess I just feel so much empathy for kids in school. It can be a really tough environment, especially for the sensitive, smart, or kind.

I hope your daughter is able to find her niche.
