In a way it's so odd that the battle lines on this intersex debate have been drawn up between parents of CAH girls and adult CAH women. In a way it's so odd that there is a debate at all. After all, if the goal is to encourage acceptance and understanding of CAH, we're both on the same side.
For those who do not like the word "intersex," why take out your displeasure on these adult CAH women? They were not the ones who coined the phrase. They have merely come to accept it.
I find it so odd that parents would be offended by an organization such as ISNA. The implication is that it caters to a fringe element---a bunch of deviants and perverts. Isn't this exactly what you want to protect your own CAH daughter against---the idea that someone would consider her a freak? So why turn around and imply that some of these adult CAH women are freaks? They may be all grown up now, but they are someone else's daughter or mother, sister or lover.
I also find it very difficult to understand how anyone could possibly equate ISNA ( "a public awareness, education, and advocacy organization which works to create a world free of shame, secrecy, and unwanted surgery....") to an organization like the Ku Klux Klan or even imply that they be considered of the same ilk. And the KKK website does
not contain links to a bunch of "mainstream" sites, as Danny suggested. See for yourself.
http://www.americanknights.com advertised as the "Main website for the American Knights. Probably the largest and most active klan orginization."
Like it or not, ISNA offers a wealth of information touching on the subject of gender identity. So often, we are quick to jump on anyone we consider to be ignorant of our children's condition----it's the big, bad world vs. those of us who have children with CAH. Closing your eyes to information that may not be what we want to hear just proliferates that ignorance. Don't we have to be sure that we are ourselves not guilty before we can point the finger at someone else?
