LauraI am not sure if you all remember me talking about getting some kind of information packet together for my endocronologist to pass out to his new patients at diagnosis. It was right after Reina posted about the death of her precious son. I suggested that everyone go back to their endo. and push for bettter education of their patients. Some of your endos. already have a good program going and I am sure satisfied with it. BUT, I feel there is always room for improvment (he,he, he) I am blessed with a wonderful, humbled, open minded endocronologist for my daughter. He does not express any kind of ego that some of the doctors that have crossed my path. I approached him with first saying that in no way was I saying his methods were bad, I just explained my concern was that I was not trained to give the Solu-Cortef shot before my daughter was released to go home after her diagnosis. I had to learn how to measure ect. for ther meds. before she was released, but nothing really detailed. He had mentioned the importance of vomitting ect. but I freaked out when I heard about giving a shot and he backed off. I told him I would drive her to the nearest E.R. if needed. (OF course everyone reading this KNOWS just how important this life saving shot is. As I do now.) I guess a doctor cannot force someone to learn this so I can understand somewhat. But if it is a requirement before discharge that is a different story. Anyway, I requested that every patient upon discharge from the hospital be made to learn how to give this shot. It would take the edge off and and I feel everyone would have already gone through their first time. I also gave him a copy of the emergency letter I personalized for our salt wasting daughter, and a copy of instructions in case she vomits ect. These instructions were personalized by my pediatrician AND endocronologist. I suggest once again that EVERYONE designs a plan of action when vomitting, fever, diarrehea, or trama such a broken bone occur, with both physicians. Communication is the key to taken quick action with these children when they get sick. If it has already been discussed, then you are half way there. Thank you for the sample letter I received. He loved it. I also am including a Medic ID. application. He is going to sit down with his nurse and discuss a information booklet to be given out to parents/guardians and patients. He has copies of several information packets I have copied off of the internet. This is something he seemed VERY open to and more than willing to meet these requests. Like I said he is an awesome endo. but I feel he to be more aggressive with this Solu Cortef shot and its grave importance.
I know we cannot change the entire world of CAH methods over night but starting with our own endos. is a VERY good start. Good luck to all.
