Personally, we've used "internal birth defect"...followed if necessary by the brief explaination that, "his adrenal glands don't make all the chemicals needed to survive, so he gets them in pill form." I always figured using the term "birth defect" let others know that it was not contagious, and that (obvious as he got older) it didn't affect what he could or couldn't do.
