Surgical choice, question for all
7/3/01 11:28 AM

Hello,

My question is:  How is it that we know that the procedure has remained the same?  Yes, Doctors are telling me that the procedure has changed in the last six years.  Can or is there somewhere I can go to do research on previous surgeries, (ones done many years before) as compared to surgeries done today?  I am facing this issue with my infant daughter and wish to make a sound and educated decision on this.  I love her just the way she is, and I realize that my snap judgement to "fix" the problem is based on my own "head trip" because of the way she appears.  My own insecure feelings being:  what will someone think or say to me if I have to change her in public.  Here I have a little one dressed in girls clothing, calling her by a female name, yet she looks male.  Or:  what will her emotional impact be after looking at herself one way, seeing other females looking another way, and then realizing she has to face this difficult and frightning surgery to "correct" her genitalia.  Do I do it before she realizes, or do I wait and let her decide.  I hear positives from surgeries in adults, and I hear negatives from adults who have had this surgery, I also hear nothing but positives from parents who have had the surgery done on their little ones, no negative stories.  I do believe in God, greatly, and as far as I am concerned, she is perfect, precious and my bundle to care for.  I am honored that the Lord intrusted  me with her care and to watch over and guide gently into womanhood.  But, who can say what is right?  So many different opinions, so many decisions I have to make.  God also gave us medicine and those with skilled hands, I just never thought I would be one that would have to make such a call concerning another beings life.  This posting is not one of challenge, merely one of questions.  I do not intend to offend anyone, just want all who matter, (all of you), to give me your opinion on this.  Thanks to all who respond.  Kaye
