Re: 12 weeks pregnant- is it too late for dex????

Congratulations, Eveie! I took the dex treatment with my salt-wasting daughter, who is almost 4, and it worked exactly as we all hoped! My daughter's genitals, urinary & reproductive tracts are completely normal. I have read, too, that sex organs form at around 6-12 weeks, but I must say that there is obviously more to it than that, otherwise why would we have to take the dex throughout the whole pregnancy??! If it was that simple, we would only need take it until 12 weeks or so, and that would be that! I am guessing that the continued, in utero, dex treatment of an affected CAH girl, will ultimately result in a lesser degree of virilizing. From my understanding, it is also the continued supply of extra testosterone that makes a CAH baby girl's genitals "ambiguious" at birth, and the dex suppresses this. If your baby girl does indeed have CAH, I can't imagine that taking the dex would be anything but good for her; perhaps at 12 weeks, it won't work quite as well as it might have, but even a little benefit could result in one less surgery or other problem for her down the road. Some of the side effects I experienced during pregnancy were excess weight gain, bloating, acne, upset stomach, reduced ability to fight off infections, sleeplessness; my blood pressure was not an issue, although some women do have problems with this, to the point of having to discontinue treatment. Despite the physical discomfort for myself, from the dex, I continue to be a strong advocate for this treatment - it was definately worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat! God's blessings to you and your family!
