You actually ended up being lucky that you made the change at that time. You saved your son the trouble and frustration of having his Liquid Cortef increased continually over the next couple of years and still loosing growth potential. Many people on this board had such a hard time titrating their children after the recall because the doctors were prescribing way too high a dose of cortef tablet to try to compensate for the ineffectiveness of the faulted liquid. They were severely oversuppressed and cushinoid. You asked why it was recalled (my specialty). Shortly after they had a difficult time getting the plants that they needed, they changed the suspension agent all together and used something that, ultimately, didn't work. It was crystalizing on the sides of the bottles and capturing the active (life sustaining) ingredient in it. So, in effect, even when the doctors prescribed more when the child's levels were off, they weren't getting anything but the thick syrup. The scary part is that many of the doctors trusted this big pharmaceutical company to the point of asking the parents if they were really giving the children their meds rather than even suspecting that there was anything wrong with the meds. Many parents from this board sent dozens of letters, made several phone calls and had their attorneys contact the company via phone and registered letters telling them of their concerns and suspicions. A few months before the Magic Convention last year, Upjohn sent out a flyer to the pharmacies telling them to put a label on the bottles saying that it must be shaken 5 - 7 minutes in order to be sure that the meds got evenly distributed. That didn't go over very well. By the time I returned from Magic convention, my pharmacist handed me a flyer that said Upjohn (with the FDA) was doing a total recall of the product because their own studies showed that 8 out of 9 children were NOT getting their intended dosing. Children died during this time and were permenantly damamgaed. There are some of us that are currently involved in a law suit against them in order to hold them accountable for the damage done to our children. Something like this must NEVER happen again!
