ConcernedI'd just like to say here that splitting pills to 02.50mg and 01.25mg is fine providing that that is exactly the dose that your child needs. I need to say here that our problem occured over four years. The blood tests results must have looked fine---I don't know I have yet to get copies of all my childs records yet. Don't forget that even a small amount such as 00.25mg extra could make all the difference to the rate that your child grows.
My other point was that if these pills were designed to be split, they would have had score marks on them one or two times with this intention in mind. The smaller the error, the longer it will take to eventuate. You won't see the disadvantages for years in some respects. I don't think it would be all that hard for pill manufacturers to get their act together and cater to patients that are using these pills for life not every now and again when they need some help with an inflamatory condition. As for the elixir, all we need is a 'recipe' that can be forwarded to pharmacists. My pharmacist makes the medicine with just the basic ingredients---no frills. Like Carol says it can be titrated to very small doses. A pharmacist will in fact always be the better way to go with these things as he will keep things very basic and be very consciencoius in the end product, after all his whole livelihood is at risk (and a childs life) if he miscalculates or makes an error. Manufacturers have to add preservatives and then they tend to add flavors and colours and any other addition and it just is not needed. Then they have to transport it and these things can be degraded in transport by heat, light etc if not done properly. Then if it is not stored properly at your pharmacy you have problems there. Our doctors used to ring the pharmacist direct if there was a dose increase, advising such and he was therefore able to make the right amount for our needs week in week out. All I can say is listen to the voice of experience. Im not here saying these things to frighten parents, just to warn you about relying on the split pills. I used to think I had all this thing mastered and under wraps---but I couldn't have been further from the truth! It is not the nature of treating CAH to get as near as damn it with splitting pills to the nearest dose. The whole objective is to replace what isn't there and that is far better achieved with syrup and a syringe.
