Julie HWhen I first studied the symptoms around ADD/ADHD I too thought the same thing really. Some kids I know that haven't got CAH have ADD/ADHD and have the medication that is supposed to solve the problem. What concerns me is that children have been hyperactive since the beginning of time and even when I was at school, I remember kids that were hard for the teacher to deal with in class and for their parents to handle at home. I personally feel that when a child does that, there are deeper underlying reasons and other chemical factors that are involved. Some kids have more of a stressful time than others and have the--- stress---cortisol increase---then behaviour or upset. This is with or without CAH! However, the kid with CAH has these hormones day in day out until someone picks up that they are receiving perhaps a little to much. If it does not show up on the blood testing, it takes longer, i.e the next bone x-ray which may not be for 12 months in some cases. I know from personal experience that it never was picked up on the bloods but analyzing the bone scans over the past 3 -4 years is a different story. I have a five year olf that at one point was catching up to his older brother in terms of height so these guys telling me it is just normal for him didn't add up.
There are far too many children being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD because they are inattentive at school or fidgity. Kids never used to be under such strict daily schdules as they are now at school. As time as gone on more is expected of them. The world has expanded and they therefore have to take infar more knowledges. For example back in the 1900's, kids just had Maths, English, Reading Writing and a few other wordly subjects to deal with. Now what do we have? All of the above plus a more comprehensive History to absorb, Geography, more religous topics to debate---need I go on. So if they get bored and distracted every now and again and don't pay attention--- because the stresses on the modern day child are FAR more than they ever were on the 1900's child---isn't it undertstandable. Arn't we robbing our childrens childhood in forcing them to take on board ALL these knowledges and expecting them all to do it at the same rate too! They used to be taught to read at school---now we are told to teach them at home---I wonder why? Because they have all these other topics to ram into them on top of the reading and social skills and there isn't enough time. So some kids are leaving school without the basic ability to read and write because some teachers are not spending the time with them. Then because they cannot stop from fidgeting as they do after any length of time or having a day dream (which even adults indulge in from time to time!) they get labelled ADD/ADHD and given a little pill or something to make them behave appropriately. Pills that have other effects and can infact have great effects on other major organs. I have had it implied that my son may be ADD/ADHD so I have looked into the symptoms. More children are diagnosed than ever with it today which is a worry--since no one knows of the side effects or long term effects of the drugs used to treat such.
So in reading your post, I would tend to agree that it is a load of crock designed to make the average teachers job a little easier at the unknown expense of our kids health, mental and physical long term.
