Re: Adrenal crisis - triggers, & how fast does it get serious?

i haven't reposnded fow quite a while due to way too much study, anyway back to the subject at hand.

I have broken arms, ribs and fingers, with my fingers having to be pinned backtogether, I am what we would of possibly called a tomboy through and through I loved my sport and in the end played hard...I am 21 now and i have NEVER had an adrenal crisis, and through my injuries have never had to have an injection. My dad is a medical doctor and of course kept a close eye on me through my ordeals, but apart from taking 3 times my does from vomiting through childhood I haven't had the injection as yet.  I have had it before anethestics which is a must, but I am guessing didfferent kids react in different ways to injury and illness.

This may seem strange but i think the closest i have come to an adrenal crisis was when I first moved away to college, I was extreamly stressed out and home sick, I couldn't eat and drink and I think by the end of the forst week my parents were very worried, I have an injection pack here at college for field trips.  I think the more severe the injury and or illness and how stressed the patient gets is the major factor in the onset of a crisis.  I haven't briken a leg yet, but if I did i am sure that i will take the injection, it is a huge stress to the body and with my parents not here i am on my own till i get to hospital. I am not only a sufferer of CAH but i am also the lucky patient of Ulcerative colitis, this of course causes a great deal of stress, but when I am out of remition I up my dose of cortisone to compenstate the stress loads in the loss of ( in the bad stages of colitis) blood and fluids.   I was told that at one stage my blood work during the onset of the colitis was so bad that i was lucky to of been around, i felt and looked fine, but my potassium levels were so low i was on the brink of a heart attack at age 14......so in many ways there is no way of telling when a child requires the injection, but I would recommend that you do not guess, and its better to be safe than sorry in any case the injection can only help, and not harm us.

Sorry about this long wind conversation and I hope it makes sense I am just about ready for an afternoon sleep..lol but how can I resist this beautiful Australian weather :-)
