Hi Chris! I guess that my post wasn't very clear - sorry!: my endo doesn't say there is anything WRONG with sports drinks (they won't HURT your child), only that she believes that they are totally inadequate for fluid replacement in sick children (especially CAH kids). These types of drinks DO contain some of the same sorts of things, like sodium and potassium, but if you compare levels, you can see that drinks that are specifically designed to replace electrolytes due to sickness - like Pedialyt - contain much higher concentrations of both. Sports drinks are formulated to replace normal fluid/ electrolyte loss caused by exercise, etc., not the massive amounts (ESPECIALLY in our CAH kids) that are lost due to sickness. I tend to agree with you that getting them to drink something is better than nothing at all, but our endo did mention the fact that too much water leaches out MORE sodium, etc., from the body, so I can only guess that this is another reason why she abhors sports drinks. I have not asked her outright, but I do believe that she thinks that if a CAH kid is sick with vomitting, diarrhea, etc. and won't drink the pedialyte, that they should be in hosptial (and not even TRY the sports drinks first), which is why I tried the old "Kool-Aid in the Pedialyte" trick! Is our endo being over cautious?? Who knows. Having lost a CAH child, I tend to be on the paranoid side myself. Hope this is clearer!
