Julie HLast year my five year old (non-CAH) had an operation to repair a hernia. He had a hydrocele in his testicle and he is my first child to have an operation of any kind. I had to let my husband go to the theatre with him as I was a total mess and didn't want ny son to see me stressed out incase he became frightened. Half way through the operation, I felt compelled to go down and wait outside the theatre doors as I then felt awful that I had not been with him before he was aneasthetised. I think the surgery that he has was quite minor but you hear so many horror stories it doesn't help. I can therefore understand you apprehension in having surgery with your CAH child due to other complications, but I think as long as they are all aware of her/his condition, that things will be ok. I deaded the time after the operation and I expected my little boy to be in great pain and all sorts of things. However, he took half haour to fully come around and was eating ice cream and jelly a short time after that (as he had gone since the night before without anything to eat and was starving!) and he never even complained of any discomfort at all in the days after. We were told not to let him jump around or get into rough play for a couple of weeks after the surgery due to his stitches (lower abdomen) but he recovered so fast that it was hard to tell him to slow down and "Don't do this or that." He paced himself and said when his tummy hurt and we would put him down for a sleep. Over all kids seem to have this knack of recovering from such with far more speed than us adults. I've been knocked flat less injury's before now and it amazes me how kids do that. I would say that you should both go down to the theatre with your child and just be there and support eachother whilst your waiting. At that time you will need that even if just for a short time. Hope all goes well.
