CindyI read an interesting article awhile back about severe hypoglycemic episodes in children with CAH. The authors reported that in their practice of about 30 CAH children, 3 (10%) had had sever hypoglycemic episodes precipitated by minor respiratory illnesses. One child died, one suffered permanent brain damage, and the other recovered fully. Upon admission to the hospital these kids had incredibly low glucose values--I think two were undetectible. In addition, there was another child in their practice who had died, possibly from hypoglycemia--but there was no laboratory testing done to prove it. The authors of the study concluded that people with CAH should monitor their blood glucose levels during illness.
I mentioned this article to my pediatrician and he wrote me a prescription for a glucometer and said I could make an appointment with the nurse to learn how to use it. I haven't purchased one yet because I'm not sure exactly how to use it (ie how often to test during illness, how low does the glucose level have to get before I do something, etc...).
Lynn, I think you said you have a glucometer. Can you answer these questions?
I have a copy of the article somewhere if anyone is interested.
