Julie HIt's occuring to me more and more as I use the board that igonorance about cah in doctors is their excuse when something goes wrong, but I think that should change. It should not matter how rare a disease is, ALL doctors should know about it and how to treat it. It's almost like most of them don't go there in their training or something because they are assuming that they will never come a cross a patient with it. What bothers me is that that is not the point. Their ignorance could cost a life one day for one kid that may have a crisis and be under their care in an emergency. I find it hard to grasp that a doctor could have a child in his care diagnosed with cah and NOT treat it, however mild it is. I think basically my son being allowed to slip into the same state is effectively just as bad if not worse, since he knew what my son had and also knew how to treat and that it had to be treated, but he did two lot's of tests and only 17 OHP (no others) within the space of 12 months after dropping his dose back by 25%. I cannot do anything about it but complain. Ive come to the conclusion that he didn't do it on purpose, but that he was greatly ignorant, which since "I" educated myself, whenever I speak to him "He" doesn't seem to know what he is doing. He is never grounded at the hospital and is always away when I need to contact him urgently--on conferences. I decided lately to complain to the Ministry of Health, The Advocacy Network, My local MP and also the head of the Hospital where he practives and have demanded that another Paediatrician se us in that hospital. Basically I couldn't care less if we get someone that initially knows nothing. That's even better than someone who "thinks" he knows everything. Atleast he will learn about things afresh and I feel do a much better job hopefully. If I can pick up knolwledges I have in two months without medical degrees, I have complete condifedence that any doctor could do a lot better. Each doctor has a different philosphy and attitude to their work and I feel as long as I get one that has the right attitude, he is malleable where my son's condtion is concerned---and once he reads and swots up---will know that the other guy did not do his job properly.
Hope that you reach a satisfactory conclusion with your case against the doctor. These things need to be pushed when and where they can be. I know I would if I could.
