Julie HSometimes surgery is necessary---infact life saving. If this is the argument "for surgery" to fix the outer appearance of something that is to prove far more useful than just ornimentation, then it is surely a poor one! Did my son need an operation to fix Hydrocele? Yes, he could have died had it got any bigger! His testicle was full of fluid and at anytime he could have ruptured this or any injury could have caused a problem. Would I have risked it if it was for appearances sake. Not really. ANY surgery for cosmetic reasons is surely only done by the person who 'wants' the surgery done, and operating on a baby's genitalia is cosmetic no matter which way you look at it. They arn't concerned by their genitals--the parent and the dotors are. If they could speak, they would surely be asking you to leave them alone (if they knew what was happening to them they most certainly would!)
Should they operate for a burst apendix? Should they operate to fix a hole in the heart? Should they put grommets in a childs ear when they have glue ear? Is this what you are trying to say is "uneccessary" too! Let's be sensible here. There are surgeries that are necessary to extend life. There are surgeries done to make things look better at the wrong time! Unless a child has a urological problem they need to be left alone until much later. It isn't necessary to abuse them physically as they are when they have examinations and operations and stretchings. We would never allow others to touch our childrens genitals at all otherwise for fear of child abuse and it affecting them psychologically. Are you telling me that these kids arn't affected that way?
