Re: Re: To All: May I Put My Two Cents In?

I agree that everyone should be able to state their opinion without being called mean-spirited, armchair doctors, or witch-hunters.  I have a hard time understanding why people even have a hard time listening to "negative" opinions of surgery.  With any surgery, there's always a certain amount of risk.  Don't you want to know what the risks of surgery are ahead of time?? Wouldn't that be the first thing you ask the doctor no matter what kind of operation you're going in for??

If you were contemplating eye surgery, and found that a very real risk of the operation was partial or complete blindness, wouldn't you want to know ahead of time??? And if someone informed you of the risks, would you accuse them of being negative and unsupportive, or would you be happy they told you??  In fact, everyone is supposed to be told of all the possible problems---big and small---before agreeing to any surgical procedure---it is part of a patient's bill of rights. Imagine walking out of an eye operation unable to see, and never having been told that blindness was a potential outcome...is there any one of us that wouldn't be angry and immediately head for the yellow pages and the nearest lawyer? I fail to see how this situation is any different.

People who have been through this themselves are just trying to make others aware of the risks that their daughters face. To me, that isn't negative at all.  It seems like they are trying to do others a favor, by letting them know that things may not turn out exactly the way it says in the brochure. I'm sure the parents of adults who have been through this didn't expect their daughters to come out of surgery with completely no feeling when they grew up.  I'm sure they were trying to do what any parent would do, which is to fix what they saw as a problem so that their daughters lives could be better as a result.

If you believe that adult CAH women who have been through this themselves are posting against surgery because they are mean-spiried and negative, then you must also believe that they have some sort of hidden agenda. Like they were just particularly unlucky so therefore don't want anyone else to have the surgery and be happy with the results.  Does anyone truly believe that this is what is driving these women, or could it be possible that they are actually trying to do people a favor?
