In pumping on top of feeding your baby, my La Leche lady advised me that you often get an over production of milk and that this can cause problems with engorgement a day or so later then. Often, they advocate that you refrain from using a breast pump where at all possible and just letting the baby suckle so that it does not upset the balance. Using a breast pump may be necessary if your babies are premies or they cannot suckle, but even then it is not necesary to pump and pump. Breast feeding is all about supply and demand so the demand comes from the infant and then our bodies adjust to the amounts as necessary. Sometimes it just takes a day or two. Stress and illness or not drinking enough fluids are a problem. There are homeopathic tablets that you can take and herbal teas to increase supply, but I would say that it would be far better to just take a tonic and eat and drink well. If the milk depletes, just put the child there to suckle as usual and this will encourage supply to increase. If the child is hungry 'and upset after suckling for the time that they normally spend at the breast, then supplement with a little formula. Your supply will come back soon.Pebbles
