Are you referring to Prof Charles Brook, formerly of Great Ormond Street and the Middlesex Hospital , UK (now retired to a sheep farm in Devon, and best place for him, I say)?  My son was under this eminent professor of endocrinology for 3 years and in that time was totally inappropriately treated.  He gave higher doses of hydrocortisone than any other specialist I know of in the treatment of CAH.  I understand he wrote an excellent paper in the early 1970's recommending doses of hydrocortisone of between 20-25mg/m2/day for a child with CAH and although in recent years this has proved to be too high for many children, he used this formula until he retired last year.  He refused to do any biochemical testing, believing that this was all that was required, plus studying the growth chart.  My son's weight escalated out of control whilst under this arrogant man and all he would say was that a child with CAH was 'meant to look like that'.  That is when I requested a second opinion as CAH children are surely supposed to be indistinguishable from any other, if appropriately treated.  In the last 4 years, my son has lost that excess weight and is now 'back on track'.  However recent tests have shown that the oversuppression he received have caused the adrenals glands to be dormant and he is undergoing extensive tests to try to restimulate them.  I have also heard of other patients of this very arrogant man who were very unsatisfied with his treatment.  I wonder whether short and fat were in his opinion the ultimate goal and perhaps he was just trying to make clones of himself.  I also wonder whether his early retirement was really through choice as I know that there are a few court cases being brought against him.  He may have been brilliant years ago but in my opinion in recent years, definately lost the plot!
