Chris DJust thought I would post some good news. Our three year old came down with the stomach flu on Tuesday. (We were out at the Children's Museum, unfortunately eating lunch, I am sure we spoiled quite a few dinners for those around us- ugh!)
This is his third bout with the flu, seems like it is going to be an annual thing. I think we are getting the hang of it now. Just like the first two times with the flu he seemed fine after he vomitted. He actually was mad at me for throwing his lunch in the garbage - said he still wanted to eat that !
We cleaned up and headed home. He still seemed fine. The first two timeshe had the flu, I hesitated to give him the injection. He ended up throwing up more and scaring us to death. This time, I decided we would just give the shot early.
When we got home I put some EMLA on his leg, waited a bit, then gave him an injection of solu-cortef. He was very mad, hates shots, and got himself quite worked up. He spit up a little, but no more vomitting. I kept a close watch on him, doubled his cortef for a day, and encouraged liquids. He was good as new by that same evening. And, as always, the extra cortef had him revved up. He didn't go to bed until almost 11:00pm then up bright and early at 6:30am. His system was a little off for about 48 hours, he had bread and butter only for Thanksgiving dinner, poor guy. But he made it through, actually better than my husband or I do with the flu.
I hope I don't sound cavalier, I know the flu can be extremely serious for CAH kids, but I did want to share a success story. I know how terrified I was the first time he threw up. To any new parents out there - it does get easier.
