Ashley & 24 hour stomach bug... 1.) Last week--aged 91/2 years/ 2.) SWCAH 3.) As we knew what it was and knew he would not be able to hold down his medication for anything up to 24 hours it seemed senseless holding off what needed to be done. I just took him straight to the Doctor for a solu-cortef jab. The GP calculated his total daily dose, (15mg) and doubled that (30mg) and then divided that into three 6 hourly doses (10mg) and then injected the equivalent only at 6 hourly intervals. We had two jabs basically. he started vomiting at around 6am in the morning, and we tried to get oral meds down first before we went to the doctors twice but this did not work. I would have injected myself, but I did not have the correct training or the kit. I get those today! Basically though, as my other kids had had the bug and others in the neighbourhood, because we knew what we were dealing with, it was easier to decide to go for the jab. It costs me $25 NZ to get the two jabs is all, and he had them in the upper arm on both arms. We were going to give another 6 hours if he had not stopped vomiting by the evening to give the 10mg orally. However he had, so I gave him his florinef and 10mg HCT then and he was fine. Slept for the most of the day. I gave him ice lollies, fruit jellies and he had anything that he wanted to drink with the exception of milk---anything as long as we got heaps of fluid down. He won't drink when he is sick. He looked blue in the lips and skin when I took him to the doctor and was very drowsy and wanted to sleep or lie down--8am--but as soon as he had the shot I noted within minutes that he fluffled up and his colouring came back to normal. Therefore I concluded that I would really not delay if you know what it is and how long it lasts. Just give the jab. The fever came later in the day and he slept it off basically through the night due to catching it early with the jab. He did not complain of any pain and as he was vomiting I ommitted the oral paracetomol. (I need to get some stocks in of suppositories and stuff for this in future---can you buy these over the counter at the pharmacists? ) His temp was not that high that it was enough to worry about though. Had he of been still vomiting past 5pm then I would have taken him to A & E to be rehydrated to be honest, but the vomting eased off within 12 hours as opposed to the 24 hours it had taken with my other kids---something to do with the jab? He was back on normal dosing the day after. He was fine and eating well the day after too. I let him eat and drink what he wnated to the day after. Because it is a virus there is not much you can do except let it run it's course and just try to get as much fluid as you can down them. The bug seems to take less time I note in a child with CAH having the shots---so hope that this helps. Regards ValVal
