Re: How you handled a stomach flu/ vomiting episode survey....

Hi Laura! Now take a big breath ... and relax!! You're doing everything right and you ARE prepared. You're right, Annelise (who is a salt-waster, as you know) has been hospitalized 4 times for stomach virus (when she was 1, twice at age 2 and 3 - like clockwork every winter). Every time - as per our endos instructions -, she vomitted and we doubled her meds. She vomitted again within half an hour and we gave her a shot of Solu-Cortef and took her to the hospital where she was admitted for IV fluids and meds. Last year, it was only a one night stay, but the year before, was a bad one and we were there for 7 nights with vomitting for 2-3 days, and diarrhea for 6. I don't recall that there was a significant fever with any of these episodes. You are also right that last year Annelise vomitted only once, and then kept her double meds down; during the night she seemed fine (slighty tired, but it's NIGHT! She was also drinking a bit of Pedialyte), but in the morning was definately disoriented and drowsy (couldn't sit up on the couch as I put her socks on - just flopped right over - and yes, it scared the WITS out of me!). I gave her the shot immediately and her doctor met us at the hospital. Turns out that her blood sugar was VERY low, and they hospitalized her just overnight to make sure she was OK after that (and she was). I've also considered getting a blood-glucose meter, and now carry glucose tablets with me in her emergency kit (thanks to some advice from this very board!) Yes, the shot of Solu Cortef also makes her very hyper, but it has never coincided with a "complete stop" to the vomitting for us. I'll say a little prayer that the flu bug will pass your household by! God's blessings.
