My son is only a year old and has already been in and out of the hospital a lot.  Drew is a salt-waster.  He has caught the bug three times already.  I always watch the first few time she vomits...especially his in and out take.  If he continues to vomit after I have already tripled the pedeapred, I inject the solu-cortef and head to the ER.  Every single time they hook him up to an I.V. drip to restore and prevent dehydration.  If after several hours he seems to be doing better and has no fever they will take him off the I.V. 

I have been one of those parents who were broken in quite early.  My advise is to always watch him closely.  If is truly hard to really know the point of danger.  When in doubt go tto the hospital.
