Re: To Kay---How did Kristen go with the Gastroenterologist?

Well, we confirmed with the gastroenterologist that it is reflux.  She told us that it apparently has been on-going, but very mild, for sometime.  Kristin was sick with a virus in November that gave her a nasty cough.  In fact, the pediatrician had given her an inhaler to help quiet the cough.  Well, in a person who already has a problem (even a small problem) with reflux, coughing can made it much worse.  When your muscles contract to help get that cough out, they also squeeze your stomach and esophagus, causing much worse reflux.  Then the esophagus gets inflamed and in Kristin's case would spasm (the sharp pain in her upper left abdomen).  Well, they are keeping her on Zantac for now to see if it will get better and gave us dietary guidelines to follow. Things like - a very low/no fat diet, no caffiene, cut back/cut out carbonated drinks (can drink them if she lets them sit for a few minutes after pouring), no exercise for 1 hr after eating, don't lie down for 1-2 hours after eating.  We see big improvement, but she says it still hurts sometimes, but not bad.  Eventually, after we get things calmed down, we can cut back on the Zantac and even try adding some things back into her diet and see how she does.  Unfortunately, you are either prone to reflux or you are not.  If you show symptoms, you will always have to be somewhat careful.  On the bright side, it is low in fat and as a result low in calories.  I am trying for the most part to eat the same stuff, so maybe it will be good for weight reduction!!!!  Weight has always been an issue with Kristin - and I could stand to lose a few myself!
