We tried Emla on my daughter and she was so small that her veins constricted so much that they couldn't get a vein and had to try again on the other arm.  My sister who is a nurse told me about another cream that is over the counter and your pharmacist can order it for you.  It's called Elamax and it's got Lidocaine (so does Emla, but Emla has another vasoconstrictor).  We use it and my daughter doesn't even cry any more!!  She's 20 pounds and 21 months!
