ValLike I said they all are hard to stick at some point. It is an unfortunate fringe benefit of this condtion that the kid needs testings. Sometimes it is harder for some children than other's. it does not mean that a child will never get used to it and accept them. A child of 3 and 4 has no concept that this will be over in a minute. That is why it DOES actually get easier as they get older. They KNOW it only will be a minute and they associate wriggling and tenseness with it hurting more and taking a darm site longer eventually. EMLA can help to break the cycle of this tenseness and the child becoming very upset BEFORE a blood draw and is amazing stuff. If it can be used for a child from the word go then that is all the better, as they are unlikely to know the true pain of a blood draw and relax. However, for the child that has had blood draws without EMLA, it will take some considerable amount of successive pain free blood draws with the EMLA cream to convince them that that asty nurse with the sharp is not going to hurt tham as much as they would without the MAGIC CREAM. Be patient---it will eventually help---but not necessarily the first or second blood draw that you try it with.
ALL kids are heard to stick. I have had to restrain Ashley and been kicked and punched before a blood draw. They ALL hate them as toddlers. What I did want to relay is that EVENTUALLY the good thing is that they become accustomed to them if your patient and take the time to help them with ditsraction techniques and educate them. This cannot be done with a 3 and 4 year old the same as a 6 year old. Therefore it can take time.
