KayGood news! A few months ago I raised questions about bone density because of the number of breaks my daughter has experienced and the fact that she has taken the drug Lupron for precocious puberty. The initial test showed low bone density which concerned us greatly. Kristin had a second bone density test done yesterday and we found out that the first one was done at a hospital using the equipment and software for ADULTS. She is only 13. The test for children is completely different! She was being compared to 25 yr old women which is the stage in life when you have the most bone density. At 13 you are still building bone density! Yesterday we saw the only doctor in town who does this test for children and found out her density is exactly where it should be for her age. She was at 99%. What a relief! Now, I will contact the pediatric orthopaedic doctor, the radiology group who performed the original test and read the results, and the hospital administrator where the first test was done to find out why they even did the test on a child.
I just wanted to post this because I may have raised questions in the minds of other parents whose children take Lupron. The doctor yesterday explained that the Lupron would not have the same effect on the bones of children as adults who are taking it for endemetrosis because the hormone levels are different. By the way, this doctor who did the bone density test yesterday is an endocrinologist who specializes in osteoporosis and other bone as they relate to hormones!
