If you have windows ME..

It has a very nifty little thing that you can use to zip files (without downloading a zip programme) and the files take up less room onnthe hard drive.  I did this most recently as it takes up less room on floppies too when transferring your files to floppy for safety--i.e. risk of lost data.

Basically I have a folder in My Docs that is titled "Main Archives"and within this folder are all the folders with information that I need i.e. abstracts---each folder is a zip folder and it is encrypted and cannot be accessed without a password.  That way kids playing on the pc cannot accidentally wip them and also other privacy issues whilst surfing are covered then.  (I mean my zone alarm is pinging every five minutes online and honestly sometimes I am not even touching the PC!)

Now to do the above you need to go to windows "Help"and look up zip folders and also encrypting folders contents---well these may be good place to start--and then read about how to do that---that is if you have WinME.  Otherwise you will need to download a free zip programme and do that instead.  I have tweaked my pc too and you can also change any pictures that you have stored in folders inot thumbnails by clicking on the folder and going into views and checking the "views"" tab.  This displays the piccies like you see them in the "My Pictures"folder and it really is taking up a lot less space on the hardrive than normal sized gif's or jpegs.

I also print off anything that I write in letter form and put into a binder as well as abstracts.  it is just nice to have them to read when I am off the pc OR have them ON the pc when I really need to send or post something  feel.

Hope that that helps.
