Sorry to hear about your son - just what you need, right, more to worry about?! It’s interesting that you should mention this: did your wife, perhaps, take dex while pregnant with your son??? This is the reason that I ask: I took dex while pregnant with our now 4 and a half yr old SW daughter. Because I was considered a high risk pregnancy for this and other reasons unrelated to the CAH, I had numerous ultrasounds throughout my pregnancy. At about 30 weeks or so, they discovered that my daughter had extra "water on the brain" (hydrocephalus) while in utero. A genetist who was really diligent at his job, did a lot of extra research and discovered that patients who take dex while pregnant (some women take dex for other reasons, and continue to do so while pregnant) tend to have a higher risk for babies with hydrocephalus. I was weaned off the dex at 36 weeks (as per instructions from our endo), and the extra "water" miraculously dissappeared! My daughter is now completely fine (concerning both the hydrocephalus AND the possible virulizing effects of CAH), and I was told that if I had not weaned off when I did, that some permanent damage could have resulted. I mention this because, at the time before our daughter was born, we had several extensive sessions with both endocrinologists and geneticists, who all agreed that treating hydrocephalus while having CAH was quite possible and managable. I’ll also mention that I know several very healthy and normal adults who have had shunts since birth! I’ve mentioned this possible side effect of dex treatment on this board several times, but - as with anything - we don’t retain certain information unless it applies to us! Most endos will not tell you about this, and I’m certain that a lot don’t even know about it, because there has been no formal study done to support it; but, in my opinion, even a few cases warrant closer scrutiny.
