Please think first

As much as I support, encourage and have even lobbied (at the state level) for improvements in Newborn Screening, this isn’t a legitimate (Constitutional) use of Federal money. From the description, the bill he’s proposing would only impliment "recommendations" not requirement for Newborn screening. Every dollar the Federal government uses on these programs is a dollar state governments can’t use, and they are much closer to the need.  Besides, such hearings result in people thinking things are getting done, when they aren’t. Look at Missouri. Several people here were cheering that they finally had newborn screening, and didn’t bother to follow up. That particular Missouri legislation has been stuck in some loophole for about a year now, and is unlikely to ever see the light of day. Never depend on government to do what you can do yourself. And if they pretend like they’re going to use your money to do it, hold their feet to the fire until it’s reality, and don’t let them trick you into thinking it’s finished.

If the results of these hearing are some namby pamby legislation that tosses suggestions and a few dollars at "education", but with some serious detrimental string atached, then calling your Congressman to support it would be the last thing you’d want to do. If you call your Congreesman, let him or her know you are concerned, and that something should be done, but don’t give blind support to legislation that isn’t even written yet. Congress is notorious for being about to turn a good bill 180 degrees and make it do the opposite of its original intent.
