Anne-MarieAshley has never broken any bones yet...touch wood. However, my daughter broke her midle finger last year doing the high jump and she was so distressed I had to pick her up from school. That was unclear also whether she had broken that, but I took her for an x-ray and sure enough, you could see the break at the metacarpal, (where the finger joins the hand) and her middle finger was completely off on an angle on the x-ray.
She had landed on her hand in a funny way as opposed to palm down when she fell. All they did was buddy that middle finger to her index (fore finger) with tape and she just had panadol pain killers.
If it had been Ashley though, I would have doubled his other meds though at least to be on the safe side. As far as I was aware it is the actual stress or shock that follows an injury that can cause the problem. There is also the possibility of infection, with some injuries where they would also need raised levels of cortisol, but stress due to injury can be cause a whole host of things that would need raised cortisol levels. That can come from the pain alone from what I have read. The body raises cortisol levels to deal with injury which sets of a chain of events such as raised blood pressure (increased blood volume) and also to increase the nutrients to the area of injury. Also acts as an anto inflammatory also--which would help with any inflammation which might arise.
When Ash was hit with the baseball the other week in the head, he came home white as a sheet and complained of headache. I did not double the meds just gave him panadol but wish I had immediately now, as during the night he started to feel nauseous and by 12 hours later was vomiting. I think had I doubled at the time of the injury, it may have prevented a hospital trip because we would have had a control of the situation right from the word go.
I will next time, no matter what the injury, because the least that can happen if he did not need it is a hyper Ashley for a day or two. As things stood, we left it so long that when they did increase the meds he needed x5 times the dose to bring things back to normality. 25mg every 6 hours orally.
Cheers
