Anne-Marie" At any rate, remember that prenatal dex treatment is for the purpose of suppressing the BABY’s adrenal glands. It is what the BABY produces that will cause virilization to happen, if at all, not what the MOTHER produces. If YOU have high testosterone levels, but your baby does not, the baby would not have virilized genitalia."
I actually thought that hormones like that could pass over the placental barrier myself.
Perhaps that is why her Doctor is advising her to take treatment? To suppress the high testosterone in the Mother and avoid any side effects to the child? Isn’t that what pre-natal dex treatment is all about? Doesn’t matter where the source of high testosterone is coming from surely?
I was studying Proscar and Finestride and even Saw Palmetto the other day. Pregnant mothers must stear clear of those because of the potential "hormone" problems that can affect baby in utero. So what makes you so sure that having raised testoserone level in the Mother will not affect the baby in utero when that is ALSO a hormone?
I don’t think her ob gyn would be advising her if there was no risk. I know sometimes Doctors get these things wrong, but don’t some don’t. I would hate for Bebe to take advice from a parent and not have dex treatment on a misunderstanding. Like I said earlier, surely it is best that she acknowledges that it may be a risk not to have dex treatment, but that what may happen is far more predicatable than the unwanted side effects of dex therapy? Better that than to avoid dex treatment because she "thought" it would be ok not to because of something someone said on this message board.
I think Bebe I would go get a second opinion if I were you really. A Professional one, especially if your unsure about what can happen. You may make different choices if you knew what can happen--or may not, but at least you will be prepared either way.
Cheers
