Hi Melanie,

Congratulations on the birth of your son!  When you say, "Lane’s newborn PKU test showed an elevated level on his CAH test," I am assuming that you are talking about newborn screening for CAH.  That is done by testing levels of the hormone 17-Hydroxyprogesterone, the same thing you’ll be drawing blood for on the 26th.

Do you know what unit of measure your son’s results were given in?   If they were expressed as "ng/dl" ("nannograms per deci-liter"), then the numbers you gave ( 45 and 33 ) are not high, at all, but completely within normal ranges.  Normal for a 3 day old male is between 7-77 ng/dl (mean 36).  I’d be happy to email you the reference, if you’d like.

If the units were, instead, expressed as "ng/ml" (nanograms per milli-liter), then the numbers would be considered elevated (equivalent to 4500 and 3300 ng/dl), and there would be more reason for concern.

At any rate, check the units used....there may be absolutely nothing for you to worry about.  Good luck and let us know what you find out!
