Hi All,

I stumbled across this site doing searches on CAH (and am glad I did!)

My 4 month old son has salt wasting CAH.  He is our 4th child, and was born a healthy 9lbs 5oz.  He failed to gain weight after birth,  and I was at my wits end, taking him in every 2 days to be weighed.  He had no other symptoms.  Finally, at 2 weeks old, he had lost a little over a pound.  Our pediatrician went with her gut and ordered bloodwork.  His sodium was very low, so we were admitted to the hospital, and were formerly diagnosed.  I’m just so thankful that he didn’t get seriously sick....I can see how some can go undiagnosed until it’s too late, and really think there should be newborn screening for this everywhere.

Anyway, today Gabrian is a happy, healthy little boy. Well, maybe not so little.....He’s about 18 pounds, and 26 inches long, which is 95th %-tile, and 85th%-tile respectively!  So far we haven’t run in to any real problems.  He takes his meds really well, although we’ve developed new ways to give them to him.  The bottle nipple with breast milk mixed with the meds works best for us right now.  He also gets extra salt, and we put that in a 4oz bottle of breast milk.  This is more of a challenge for him to take.

Well, I just wanted to introduce myself, and look forward to reading about your experiences with CAH.  Maybe some of you with a bit more experience can give me tips and warn me of any challenges that may be in my future :)

Thanks,

Shannon
