prednisone & Paramedics
Aug. 10th, 2002   7:25pm

I was socializing with a group of Paramedics/Fire Fighters. They noticed I was wearing a medic alert bracelet.  After a little bit of "ask her...ask her" among themselves , One of them piped up and said,"What is your illness?"     I went illness????  hummmm??? then they motioned to my medic alert bracelet. Ohhhh... this...yeah, I’m dependent on cortisone- I have CAH. Without cortisone, I could DIE. My body couldn’t handle a stressful accident or illness with out it. I told them if they ever had a person who is cortisone dependent they have to give that person more cortisone to help that person’s body in time of physical stress. I also told them to listen to the parent when it comes to this and of course the ER DOC on their radio.

The one Paramedic thought about it, then said, " The only cortisone I carry on the truck is Prednisone, which is used for people with respiratory problems." Prednisone is what I take anyway, so it is good that they have it. Would it be better for them to give me their  IV OF PREDNISONE instead of a shot that I have with me or is either way good?

After all this they thanked me. The one said they had never heard about CAH before and was glad that I told them.

Thanks,

Aimee
