I agree with what you say and believe in the majority of cases that surgery should be delayed until a child is able to take part in the decision making.  I know that dex is still in the ’experimental’ stage but that most mothers take it to reduce the effects of virilisation, not because they are uncomfortable with their childs genitals, but in order that their daughters surgery (if required) will be less severe.  Whilst clitoral surgery is purely cosmetic, vaginal surgery is necessary at puberty in order for girls to function  and even if left until later, is not always successful - as I am sure you are aware.  If there is the chance that the dex will prevent girls having to undergo this major operation or can reduce the severity, I can well understand anyone deciding to try it. It is frightening though that they have to weigh up the risks of the possible side effects of dex against the possible benefits - what a nightmare!  Every parent must be given all the options and information and must make their own minds up.
