Hi Amy,

I would strongly suggest you get a proper Medic Alert bracelet. They have a 24 hr service that emergency personnel can call for all the important information on the wearer of the bracelet. They record the child’s doctor(s) names and numbers, parents/guardian’s numbers, medical condition and medication names  and send you regular information update forms. There are several different types of bracelets and necklets you can order and they guarantee that the engraving willnot wear off. When my son first got his at 3 months, we took it into a jeweller to make the bracelet small enough to fit on his wrist. We kept the links, and just have them added as he gets bigger.

I think that seconds count in an emergency situation, and the Medic Alert bracelet is the most easily recognized by medical personnel. I’ve been told that the ankle is not a good place for the bracelet since ankles are usually covered by clothing, especially in winter with snowsuits and boots. Necklaces are more likely to be a choking hazard for babies. My son never had a problem with his bracelet. It is never taken off.
