My 10 yr old son has been taking the bus since Kindergarten. I had advised the director of school transportation at the beginning of that school year and sought her advice. She said that the bus driver was not even allowed to keep a kit on the bus nor, would she be able to do anything about a serious sitruation anyway. Fortunately, our school is literally 5 min down the road, so she agreed that should my son fall ill while on the bus, the bus driver would skip upcoming stops and drive Ben directly home. I was a stay at home Mom until he was in 4th grade and could easily have driven him everyday, but I also figured I can’t be with him every second. He wears a Medic-alert, we live very close, they are aware of the situation - I just felt I had to let him live and take a chance. Like Janet said, I could be with him and not actually be able to help him anyway, just because I send a kit with someone  doesn’t ensure that it would end up in the right hands or receive the proper care. Hopefully now I don’t sound callous or aloof about the situation. I just figure, I can’t follow him around and be there every second for the rest of his life. Nor, now being in 5th grade, would he want me to be. Certainly, one of my primary goals as his Mom is maintain his health as best as possible, but it is also to let him feel free and independent. I,  also like Janet, have taught him from a young age all about his disorder and what he needs to know about and what to do. I can only hope for the best!
