Looking for info on physical injury stress & adrenal crisis (long)

Looking for more sage advice from all of you experienced parents... My son is just about to start Jr. Kindergarten and I’ve been trying to get everything in place to ensure that he is as safe as possible. I learned this morning that our local ambulance service will NOT give a solu-cortef injection in an emergency situation because it is not part of the "delegated medical procedures" that they are allowed to carry out. I was shocked! I’ve been driving around with a false sense of security because I have my son’s medic alert info and his injection kit clipped to his booster seat whenever we are in the car. I knew that the EMT do not carry solu-cortef, so I thought we were being (fairly) safe by carrying it with us at all times, so that if I am incapacitated in an accident, they would see it attached to his seat and give it to him.

Our school principal is trying very hard to get a motion passsed within the board so that she and my son’s teacher can be trained to give the injection. At the present time, though, the union does not allow it.

After pannicking (a bit) about my son’s safety if he were to fall and break his leg for example while playing at school, I contacted our endocrinologist. He assured me that there would be more than enough time for the ambulance drivers to get my son to the hospital for proper treatment. (It would take approx. 1/2 hour total for the ambulance to get to the school and transport him to hospital).

Have any of you experienced a serious physical injury that would require an injection? What have you been told regarding how quickly an adrenal crisis would occur after physical injury? I know that I should trust our endo, but I want to know if any of you have found anything different from what I was just told. I just purchased a pager today so that I can be reached at any time, but there are times during the week where I plan to be approx 20 minutes away from the school.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Jill T.

P.S. We live in Ontario, Canada.
