robertaYes CAH can be scary ... but it is treatable and children are normal in every way. Do educate yourself and know that fever, injury, vomiting, surgery - NEEDS more cortef. Always (REPEAT - ALWAYS) have solu-cortef with you. Do not believe for a minute that a FEVER is not an emergency - IT IS with an infant and especially with a CAH baby. Immediately triple the cortef orally and reduce the fever. The fever should reduce within 30 to 45 minutes. And if the infant is legarcic (too sleepy - will not wake) the blood pressure may be too low and electrolytes imbalance and this will cause coma and death (YES - CAH is scary - this is something not to take lightly) Remember you can not overdose with cortef during illness but if you don’t get enough - he will go into adrenal shock and die. A normal person makes 4 to 10 (repeat 10 times) more cortisol or cortef during illness. Do you have a solu-cortef injection kit? GET ONE!!
The doctor should be monitoring the 17-OHP as well as the sodium. And the Plasma Renin.
I have two boys with CAH (salt wasting). I live in Virginia.
